From Oslo to Geneva: Halvard’s First Year in International Economics

Deskripsi

Halvard, a 25‑year‑old from Oslo, reflects on his first year in the International Economics programme at the Geneva Graduate Institute. Drawn by the Institute’s blend of economics, politics, and international relations, he describes a rigorous, quantitative first year complemented by interdisciplinary electives. A standout moment was an economic history course that connected modern economic theory to long‑term historical patterns, from medieval trade to structural change. During the winter break, he completed a six‑week internship at Norway’s Finance Ministry, contributing to national budget work and austerity analysis—directly applying concepts from his coursework. He also highlights the tight‑knit economics community, where informal coffees, seminars, and faculty interactions shape the student experience, and encourages newcomers to lean on professors and older students when settling into Geneva. 00:00 Meet Halvard 00:08 Why This Program 00:48 First Year Rigor 01:14 Favorite Course 01:51 Winter Internship 02:26 Community and Faculty 03:09 Advice for New Students 03:31 Settling In Geneva
