From Classroom Theory To Market Reality: The Radical Truth About African Academia

Deskripsi

Guest: Dr. Robert E. Hinson, Professor of Marketing & Double Doctorate Holder, University of Ghana Business School At 30, most people are figuring out their careers. Dr. Hinson was selling refrigerators between university classes, running back to lectures, building what would become 30 years of industry immersion. Fast forward: 42 published books. Over 120 companies served. A professor who refuses to teach from textbooks because he's been inside the boardrooms where the real decisions happen. On this Discourse, Dr. Robert E. Hinson (Professor of Marketing at the University of Ghana Business School, PhD, Double Doctorate) joins us to discuss the age-old debate between academia and industry: why are graduates often deemed "not market ready," and how can African universities adapt their curriculum to meet industry demands in a rapidly changing world? Dr. Hinson argues that Academia must proactively draw closer to industry with solid proposals, integrating employer feedback, developing soft skills, and recruiting academics who are immersed in solving real-world problems. He emphasizes the critical need to create African content and case studies to drive advancement across the continent. In this video, you will learn: • Why humility is needed on both sides of the academia/industry debate. • The essential split of time for serious academics (30-40% teaching, 20-30% research, the rest solving industry issues). • The "razor sharp" principle: Why staying immersed in problem-solving keeps professors highly effective. • Why foundational subjects like History, Sociology, and Geography are desperately needed to solve modern society's problems.
