Deskripsi
Right now in Britain, more than 82,000 asylum seekers are waiting for a decision on their future. For many, life is on hold, no work, limited support, and endless uncertainty. At the same time, over half of UK councils report they may face bankruptcy within two years, threatening the very services that displaced families rely on. We are told that refugees are a "burden" on the state, but what if the real burden is a system designed to manage people rather than empower them? In this episode of Builders of the Broken Bazaar, Dr. Tabish Zaman sits down with Severine Kipili, Founder of Bora Shabaa. Severine’s journey is one of radical resilience; after fleeing war in 1998 and spending seven years in a refugee camp in Zambia, she arrived in the UK with no English and no roadmap. Today, she leads an organization that transforms church basements and community halls into hubs of belonging, proving that lived experience is not a limitation, but a foundation for agency. We explore: The Reality of Arrival: Severine’s personal account of being "completely lost" in a new country and the psychological toll of starting from zero. Dignity Beyond Charity: Why Bora Shabaa moves beyond "handouts" to empower refugees to lead, volunteer, and teach. Informality as Infrastructure: How a handful of women and a few sewing machines built a support system that official institutions couldn't provide. The "Human" in Refugee: A critique of how media and policy turn people into slogans and numbers, ignoring the doctors, teachers, and contributors behind the label. Systemic Funding Gaps: The unique challenges faced by black, female-led organizations in accessing the resources needed to scale their impact. The Power of Connection: Stories from the frontline, from solving energy crises for the elderly during a pandemic to helping neighbors find their voice through ESOL. 🎧 "Refugees are human beings. They have the capacity to help the economy... if there is peace, people would like to live in their own countries." Keywords: refugee empowe
