Episode 25: Some people are measured, others are filtered!

Deskripsi

In the digital age, we are told that remote work is a lifestyle of convenience and flexibility. But in places like Palestine, digital work is something else entirely: it is a bridge over concrete walls and a refusal to let geography determine human potential. When physical movement is restricted by checkpoints and blockades, the digital labor market becomes a vital space for economic survival and agency. In this episode of Builders of the Broken Bazaar, Dr. Tabish Zaman sits down with Kathrine Tinggaard Nicolaisen, founder of Olives & Heather. Kathrine built a high-flying career in London, Berlin, and Amsterdam before making the radical decision to move her work to Palestine in 2020. She quickly realized that Palestinian talent didn't need more "short-term training"—they needed infrastructure and access to global markets. Today, her agency delivers world-class marketing for international clients, proved by excellence rather than sympathy. We explore: • The Access Gap: Why talent is abundant in Palestine, but access to international trust and payment pathways remains the primary barrier. • From Fashion to Tech to Agency: Kathrine’s personal journey of seeking an "ethical" career and how Palestine became her "duty, not just a desire". • Entrepreneurship as Infrastructure: Moving beyond the NGO model to build a sustainable, private-sector bridge for Palestinian digital professionals. • Leading Through Crisis: The "schizophrenic" reality of managing SEO projects and client deadlines while team members are navigating war, displacement, and loss. • Solidarity vs. Deals: Why "solidarity opens doors, but it doesn’t close deals," and the importance of being judged on performance. • Dignity as Resistance: Using professional rigor as a form of resistance against a system that tries to "other" and marginalize Palestinian talent. 🎧 "Dignity is not something you earn; it’s something you deserve."
