He argues that empires in decline blunder into military adventurism to regain lost hegemony, but this only accelerates decline, as seen with the Austro-Hungarian and Athenian empires—and that the US is now in a state of "implosion," not managed decline, because the Trump administration has no strategic competence. Hedges also notes that the livestreamed genocide in Gaza has sent a stark message to the global south, which has suffered its own genocides (Namibia under Germans, Bengal famine under British, Kenya under British), obliterating any western veneer of concern for human rights and democracy. He concludes that 77% of registered Democrats want to cut military aid to Israel, but the Democratic party is "part of the problem," locked into a "fantasy world driven by corporate money," leaving no credible opposition.
