Alex Compton Unfiltered: Manila Roots, Championships & Coaching Secrets | Let It Fly S3 Finale

Deskripsi

In the season 3 finale of the Let It Fly podcast crew sit down with one of the game’s most influential figures. Born in Manila and raised in the U.S., coach Alex Compton became a two‑time MBA champion, a 1999 MBA MVP, PBL Finals MVP and a long‑time PBA head coach who twice helped the national team win silver medals. This episode pulls back the curtain on his journey from his parents’ Peace Corps days and his return to the Philippines in 1998, to the on‑court battles and cultural adjustments that forged him into a champion and mentor. Compton opens up about his childhood, his early exposure to Thai and Lao culture, and how being “the kid with the passport” shaped his identity. He recalls the moment a college assistant coach told him about hoops in the Philippines, sparking his desire to play where he was born. That curiosity led to a playing career marked by self‑described nerdiness for film study, a love for competition and an affinity for pressing the limits of what his body could do sometimes literally, as he relates the hilarious story of separating his shoulder diving for a loose ball in practice. The conversation delves into his coaching philosophy. He shares why he pressed full‑court off missed shots, why he poured into Bible study and financial literacy sessions with his players, and why he believes caring for athletes as people fuels on‑court success. Gabe and Sol reflect on how he was the first coach in the Philippines who truly invested in them as men, not just players. Compton also candidly analyses his finals runs with Alaska—breaking down his time‑out strategy, the heartbreak of surrendering a 3‑0 lead and the importance of humility and mentorship in leadership. Whether you’re a die‑hard PBA fan or simply love great storytelling, this finale delivers humour, hard‑earned wisdom and rare glimpses into the mind of a coach who has lived the game from every angle.
