A collection of novelettes, short stories, and poems by the author of ‘Muted’ and the ‘Outback Riders’ series. Many of the stories highlight the resilience of the girls and women who live in the outback. Moving and memorable tales that will stay with you long after the book is finished. ‘Flame the Fire Horse’ is the story of a legendary horse of the outback, as well as the stockman who knew him. Follow the remarkable life of the chestnut stallion and the quiet man who loved him, right up to their final heart-breaking encounter. (This story was serialised in the Australian equine magazine, ‘Rider’.) ‘The Moon Horses of Malaron’ is the tale of Taylor, a teenage girl who is forced to move from the city to a cattle station in the outback of Queensland. The Moon Horses are a mystery that the children of the outback station, Malaron, have learned to accept, but Taylor wants to know what they are...sometimes, mysteries are best left unsolved. ‘My Baloo’ is the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of competing at international level on her rescue horse. Mollie knows that, first, you dream, then you plan, and then you work harder than anyone else, and, finally, if luck is on your side, you achieve. Follow Mollie from the age of twelve, all the way to the Olympics. ‘The Blood Horse’ is the heartbreaking story of what happens to a family and a horse when tragedy strikes in the form of a riding accident. ‘Blood in the Dust’ covers a typical day in the outback life of a woman on a station, with a shocking twist at the end. ‘The Governess: Letters Home from the Station’ covers the life of a young woman who goes west to governess, and settles in the outback, finding a resilience within herself that is needed to survive all that the land throws at her, from droughts all the way to the devastating outback floods of 2019.
