Beneath the Stars and Stripes: The Untold Story of Filipino Sailors in the U.S. Navy

For nearly a century, tens of thousands of Filipino men served in the United States Navy—yet their stories remain largely unspoken.Beneath the Stars and Stripesuncovers this overlooked legacy, tracing the lives of Filipino sailors from colonial times to Cold War deployments, from steward’s quarters to leadership roles.Drawing on personal letters, oral histories, and official records, Gerald R. Anderson offers a powerful and deeply human portrait of service, sacrifice, and resilience. From the young recruits of Cavite and Olongapo to the sailors who served aboard ships during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, this book brings to light the struggles and triumphs of men who bridged two nations through duty, loyalty, and quiet dignity.More than a military history, this is a story of families left behind, of identity forged in foreign waters, and of a community that helped shape the modern Navy while laying the foundation for generations of Filipino American families.Whether you're a veteran, a history enthusiast, or simply curious about the threads that tie the Philippines and the United States together,Beneath the Stars and Stripesoffers a moving and essential chapter of shared history—finally told.Read more
