QUR’ANIC VERSES ABOUT CORRUPTION OF EARLIER SCRIPTURES (TAḤRĪF) 1) Qur’an 2:79 “So woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say, ‘This is from Allah,’ in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn.” Meaning: Explicit condemnation of fabricating scripture and attributing it to God. 2) Qur’an 5:13 “…They distort words from their proper places and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded.” Meaning: Indicates alteration of wording and loss/omission of original revelation. 3) Qur’an 5:15 “O People of the Book, Our Messenger has come to you making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture…” Meaning: Confirms deliberate concealment of parts of revelation. 4) Qur’an 2:85 “Do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part?” Meaning: Criticism of selective acceptance, a form of distortion. 5) Qur’an 3:78 “And indeed, there is a group among them who twist their tongues with the Scripture so that you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture.” Meaning: Refers to verbal distortion and misquotation. HADITH RELATED TO CORRUPTION / CONCEALMENT 1) Concealment of the Torah ruling Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: A Jewish man and woman were brought to the Prophet ﷺ for adultery. The Jews read from the Torah but covered the verse of stoning with their hand. The Prophet ﷺ exposed the verse and ordered the punishment.
