Why Your Career Needs Risk Management. What I Learned from a Failed Business .Batje's Take 10

Description

Imagine you run a mobile kitchen. You cook sadza hot, hearty, affordable and business is going well. Then a relative switches off the fridge while you're away. And just like that, your entire meat stock is gone. Is that a business problem? Or a risk management problem? In this solo episode of Batje's Take on HUMHR Career Insights, Batje Chibafa reflects on her conversation with Una Nyikadzino, founder of Standout and former Executive Director at Shrips Holdings Africa, the first woman ever to hold that role. Una built the Farm Style brand, watched it fold, and rebuilt. She knows risk. She knows resilience. The moment that stayed with Batje? When Batje asked Una what Africa needs most to unlock its potential — and Una didn't say infrastructure, funding, or electricity. She said one word: water. And that answer unlocks something much bigger about careers, about risk, and about what every one of us needs to survive what we cannot predict. This episode includes: 🌾 The sadza story that perfectly illustrates career risk management 💧 Una's one-word answer to what Africa needs most — and what it means for your career 🐔 Batje's own 100-chicken story: a very real, very costly lesson in risk 📧 The email migration disaster that cost Batje 10 years of business history 📋 How to map your career risks like an entrepreneur maps business risks 🧱 Three practical action points you can start this week 🌍 Why the humanitarian sector especially cannot afford to skip this Whether you're in a stable job or navigating a career transition right now , this episode is for you. ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 The Sadza Analogy When Risk Hits Without Warning 01:18 Is It a Business Problem or a Career Problem? 01:32 Reflecting on Una Nyikadzino's Story 02:14 What Does Africa Need Most?
