Description

The Democratic Republic of Congo is a mineral-rich nation, but for the past several years this mineral-rich paradise has been facing atrocities from several rebel groups. To maintain peace and harmony in the country 20 years ago UN peacekeeping forces by the name of MONUC were posted by the United Nations. As the year pasts many things changed in the Democratic Republic of Congo whether it was the local politics or the way of living and culture. Another change was in the name of UN peacekeeping forces which got changed from MONUC to MONUSCO. The UN peacekeeping forces in DRC were the largest peacekeeping force in any country posted/appointed by the UN at that time. With more than 20,000 personnel on the ground, guarding the Congolese people from the ferocious rebel groups in the country. Initially, the Congolese people (locals of Congo) were really happy with the mandate as they believed that the troops will keep them safe, but after a few years, they saw insignificant changes when it comes to the security of the citizens. The UN peacekeeping forces although have engaged in good tasks and services on the ground like that distributing food and other basic amenities but still, the Congolese people have not been pro-UN forces in DRC due to the lack of trust in them when it comes to security. The Democratic Republic of Congo is not a small country, it is the second largest country in Africa thereby which makes it difficult for the government as well as the peacekeeping forces to maintain peace in the country, especially in its eastern provinces like Goma, Ituri, North and South Kivu. Thereby, these aspects raise a significant question that has the UN peacekeeping forces failed their very purpose in DR Congo? The Congolese people have been facing atrocities of a plethora of rebel groups in the country from past many years now, which needs a settlement in this modern era.
