Description
Filipino modern art history, Picasso Philippines myth debunked, Victorio Edades Philippine modern art, Vicente Manansala Transparent Cubism, Cesar Legaspi Filipino artist, Thirteen Moderns Philippines, Filipino Neo-Realists, Madonna of the Slums Manansala, post-war Philippine art, Filipino Cubism history — the viral claim that Pablo Picasso secretly stole his most revolutionary ideas from a forgotten Filipino master is one of the most persistent myths in art history and it is completely false. But the real story is far more powerful. It is the story of how Filipino modernists took the language of Cubism after the devastation of World War Two and forged a national artistic identity that owed nothing to theft and everything to brilliance. The myth gets the story completely backward. Picasso's documented influences were ancient Iberian sculpture, African masks that helped him shatter the human form in Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, and his intense partnership with Georges Braque the co-founder of Cubism. There is no Filipino connection in any of the archives, letters, or scholarly work. But after World War Two when the Philippines lay in ruins and its identity was being rebuilt from rubble, a generation of Filipino artists rejected the romantic golden paintings of Fernando Amorsolo and turned to the radical language of European modernism. Victorio Edades returned to Manila in 1928 with dark heavy colors and distorted muscular forms that scandalized the art establishment. His painting The Builders shocked Manila. Edades, Carlos Botong Francisco, and Galo B. Ocampo formed the core of the Thirteen Moderns who cleared the way for Filipino Cubism. After the war, two artists changed everything. Cesar Legaspi took Cubism and filled it with deep humanism, painting figures half-man half-machine trapped in industrial gears in works like Gadgets. Vicente Manansala developed a style so original it became known as Transparent Cubism — overlapping translucent planes of color that captured Filipino life in works like Madonna of the Slum
