The Oyo Empire's Female King: Iyalode Efunsetan Aniwura — Fexingo History

Description

Before the Oyo Empire crumbled, a woman rose to become one of its most powerful figures: Iyalode Efunsetan Aniwura, the 'Female King' of Ibadan. This episode dives into her remarkable story—how a former slave built a vast trading empire in slaves and palm oil, commanded armies, and wielded political influence that rivaled any male chief. We explore the role of the Iyalode, a female chieftaincy title unique to Oyo and its successor states, and how Efunsetan used it to amass wealth and power. But her story ends in tragedy: in 1874, she was assassinated on the orders of the Are-Ona-Kakanfo, the empire's supreme military commander, after a bitter power struggle. We also discuss the controversies around her legacy—was she a ruthless slaver or a shrewd businesswoman ahead of her time? Her life illuminates the complex gender dynamics of 19th-century Yorubaland, where women could achieve extraordinary influence within a patriarchal system. This episode draws on oral traditions, missionary accounts, and the work of historian Bolanle Awe to paint a vivid portrait of a woman who defied every expectation.#EfunsetanAniwura #Iyalode #OyoEmpire #Ibadan #YorubaHistory #WomenInHistory #19thCenturyAfrica #SlaveTrade #PalmOil #AreOnaKakanfo #BolanleAwe #Nigeria #FemaleKing #WestAfrica #PrecolonialAfrica #PowerfulWomen #History #FexingoHistory #NigeriaHistory #BeninKingdomBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-nigeria-kingdoms-colonies-and-africa-s-giant-fexingo-history--6985098/support.
