The Conquest of Jerusalem | How Bedouins Destroyed The World’s Largest Army | Ramadan Series 2026

Description

In Episode 2 of his Ramadan Series, Shaykh Yasir Qadhi explores one of the most defining moments in Islamic history, the conquest of Jerusalem and the transformation of a small desert community into a moral force that reshaped the world. This episode traces the campaigns launched under Abu Bakr across al Sham, the decisive victories against the Byzantine forces, and the events that ultimately led to Jerusalem becoming part of the Muslim world. From the fall of Damascus to the crushing victory at Yarmouk, the episode examines how a numerically inferior army overcame one of the greatest empires of its time. It highlights the remarkable exchanges between Muslim commanders and Roman generals, the humility of Muadh ibn Jabal, the conviction of Khalid ibn al Walid, and the moral discipline that distinguished the early believers. When Heraclius questioned why his forces could not withstand the Muslims, even his own advisors pointed to the character and spiritual integrity of the opposing army. The story then moves to Jerusalem, the sacred city revered by Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. When the Christian Patriarch Sophronius insisted that he would only surrender the city to the Muslim leader himself, Umar ibn al Khattab traveled from Madinah in simplicity, wearing patched clothes and riding a borrowed camel. His arrival astonished the people of Jerusalem. He guaranteed the safety of lives, property, and churches, refused to pray inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre out of concern that future Muslims might misuse that act as justification for harm, and demonstrated that leadership in Islam is rooted in accountability before Allah. This episode is not merely about conquest. It is about how faith, discipline, consultation, and humility elevated a people who were once divided and powerless. It is a reminder that true strength is not measured by numbers or wealth, but by moral clarity and devotion to Allah.
