The Basi Revolt: Wine, Class, and Colonial Uprising in the Philippines — Fexingo History

Description

In 1807, the sleepy town of Piddig in Ilocos Norte erupted in rebellion over a drink: sugarcane wine, or basi. This episode of The History of the Philippines takes you to the foothills of the Cordillera mountains, where Spanish colonial authorities tried to monopolize the production and sale of basi, a beloved local spirit that had been brewed for centuries. The revolt was led by a charismatic couple, Pedro Mateo and Maria Salome, who rallied thousands of Ilocanos armed with bolos and bamboo spears against Spanish muskets. We explore why basi mattered more than rice, how the colonial government crushed the revolt with brutal reprisals, and how the memory of the Basi Revolt lives on in Filipino folk songs and the famous Basi Revolt paintings. This is a story about class, culture, and the stubborn dignity of everyday Filipinos who refused to let the state control their drink. No grand generals, no famous battles — just a people fighting for their right to a glass of wine.#BasiRevolt #PhilippineHistory #IlocosNorte #Piddig #PedroMateo #MariaSalome #BasiWine #ColonialRevolt #SpanishColonial #WineMonopoly #Ilocano #FolkSong #CulturalResistance #1807 #Sugarcane #FexingoHistory #History #SoutheastAsia #Philippines #BanaueRiceTerracesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-the-philippines-empires-colonization-and-identity-fexingo-history--6985184/support.
