The Basement: Joseph Matheny | The Man Who Hacked Reality Before the Internet Existed Joseph Matheny invented something in 1989 that nobody had a name for yet. He called it a story. The internet called it the first alternate reality game. The Navy called him to ask how he did it. He turned them down. Tonight he's in the basement explaining how he built an early AI, game-mastered Robert Anton Wilson at Esalen, and why QAnon looks so familiar to him. Some things are better understood when you know how the trick works. #OnsHat #ARG #AJGentile #JoeMatheny 00:00 - Intro 01:01 - Chicago Origins: Counterculture Mentors, Books, and the First Transmedia Experiment 14:32 - Del Close's Golden Dawn Secret and the Internet as a Storytelling Medium 27:30 - Robert Anton Wilson, Finding VALIS, and an Accidental Life in Santa Cruz 50:16 - Driving Bob Wilson: Ed Wood, Orson Welles, and the Esalen Illuminati LARP 1:14:39 - Building Emory: Training a Proto-AI on the Weird Stuff Before AI Existed 1:41:43 - The Real Emory: A Houseless Stranger Who Knew Things He Shouldn't 1:53:09 - Ong's Hat: Graffitiing a Myth onto the New Sphere 2:09:38 - John Titor, Operation Mindfuck, and Weaponized ARGs 2:29:45 - Crypto Terrestrials and the Intelligence That Speaks Through Technology 2:38:27 - Outro 〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰 Executive Producers: Jennifer Gentile Gino Gentile AJ Gentile Patreon Members Editors: Joe Stone Drew Sullivan Brandon Snyder Ryan Fitzgerald Producers: Victoria Young Haley Burke Research: Haley Burke AJ Gentile Gino Gentile Jen Gentile Victoria Young Written/Hosted by: AJ Gentile Hecklefish J.
