The 1745 Agrarian Revolt: Filipino Peasants vs Spanish Friars — Fexingo History

Description

In 1745, a wave of peasant uprisings swept across the provinces of Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna in the Philippines. Farmers and indigenous communities, driven by the rapid expansion of Spanish religious orders' haciendas, rose up against the friars who had seized their ancestral lands. Lucas and Luna explore the causes, key figures like Francisco Carreon, and the response of the colonial government under Governor-General Juan de Arechederra. They discuss the role of the Real Audiencia, the partial concessions made, and how these revolts foreshadowed later anti-colonial movements. The episode also examines the broader context of land dispossession, the fusion of economic and religious power, and the long-term impact on Philippine society. From the burning of churches to the testimonies of native leaders, this is a story of resistance that is often overlooked but essential to understanding the roots of Filipino nationalism.#PhilippineHistory #1745AgrarianRevolt #Haciendas #SpanishColonialism #FriarLands #Batangas #Cavite #Laguna #FranciscoCarreon #RealAudiencia #JuanDeArechederra #LandDispossession #PeasantRevolt #ColonialResistance #PhilippineRevolts #FexingoHistory #History #SoutheastAsianHistory #Philippines #BanaueRiceTerracesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-the-philippines-empires-colonization-and-identity-fexingo-history--6985184/support.
