Teaching My Kids ShonaI Rava Bhuku Children’s Books By Tammy Richards

Description

In this episode, Nat chats with Tammy Richards, founder of Rava Bhuku and creator of bilingual children’s books designed to help families connect with African languages and culture. What began as a simple desire to teach her own children Shona has grown into a thriving business, with books available in multiple languages including Shona, Twi and Swahili. Tammy shares the story behind Rava Bhuku, from creating homemade learning resources for her daughters to navigating the world of publishing, entrepreneurship and social media. Together, Nat and Tammy explore the importance of preserving language across generations, raising children in the diaspora, and the role language plays in shaping identity, belonging and cultural connection. Tammy also reflects on motherhood, building a business while raising a family, and the lessons she has learned about herself along the way. Whether you’re a parent, an entrepreneur, or simply interested in culture, identity and heritage, this conversation is a powerful reminder that language is more than words. It’s a bridge between generations. Tammy’s books can be found through Rava Bhuku, and if you’re attending Zimfest or Yebo Festival this summer, be sure to stop by and say hello.
