Ishq Da Rang is a soulful Punjabi Sufi Qawwali about the transforming color of divine love the kind of Ishq that slowly dissolves the ego, turns longing into devotion, and makes the seeker realize: “Andar baahar tu hi tu.” Beginning with a soft female alaap, the song moves through longing, sleepless nights, the search for the beloved, and the timeless symbolism of Ranjha, Heer and the Sufi path. The male and female voices answer one another in traditional Punjabi call-and-response, gradually building toward an ecstatic Qawwali climax around “Sohna Yaar.” The spiritual heart of the song appears in the line: “Ishq de vich haar ke jeetna, Jis ne apna aap gawaya, Us ne sabh kuch paaya.” Inspired by the poetic tradition of Punjabi Sufism and the philosophy associated with Bulleh Shah, Ishq Da Rang explores surrender, selflessness, longing and the realization that the Beloved is not separate from the seeker.
