History Destroyed in Shipping: Can we save an 80s HALiKAN laptop?

Description

I did NOT wanna make this video but here we are. This is the Chaplet Halikan LA-30A, or pieces of it anyway! A fascinating 1980s machine, one of the first laptops combining a backlit display, hard drive, and ISA slots into a system that could run entirely on batteries. Neat! Unfortunately, while this rare beast was in good shape before shipping, it did not look so great once it arrived. The plastics on these things are increasingly brittle, so if anything I want this video to act as an LGR public service announcement: USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN SHIPPING OLD PLASTIC COMPUTERS. Even better, don't ship at all if it can be avoided. ● LGR things elsewhere: https://www.patreon.com/LazyGameReviews https://bsky.app/profile/lgr-yt.bsky.social ● Pertinent links: 1989 iF Design award https://ifdesign.com/en/winner-ranking/project/laptop-computer-halikan-la-22-la-30/18671 Chaplet Systems brochure PDF https://www.1000bit.it/ad/bro/chaplet/ChapletSystems-HALIKAN.pdf Rebuilding the nickel cadmium battery https://freegeekvancouver.blogspot.com/2011/06/mystery-laptop.html ● Background music licensed from Epidemic Sound: http://www.epidemicsound.com 00:00 welcome to LGR sadness 01:58 introducing the HALiKAN 03:16 it's all made of pain 04:52 it sure was neat once 05:45 ISA slots, NiCd battery 08:46 satisfying keyboard 09:38 poor PC speaker 10:02 the motherboard 10:49 can it be saved? 12:10 first power on test 12:36 second power on test 13:53 40MB Conner HDD 16:32 MS-DOS 3.3 boot disk 17:07 Kingdom of Kroz 19:26 SHIP WITH CAUTION #LGR #retro #computer #shipping
