Global National: May 15, 2026 | Carney, Alberta Premier Smith sign pipeline deal

Description

The pathway to a new oil pipeline from Alberta to the coast of British Columbia is much clearer Friday, after Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith signed a deal. The two setting a new carbon price for Alberta and allowing the province to proceed as a joint proponent – with a proposal coming as early as Canada Day and construction as soon as next year. Environmental groups and First Nations along B.C.’s northern coast are joining Premier David Eby in opposing the project. The potential for an oil spill, and the expansion of fossil fuel production amid the accelerating effects of climate change, are key concerns. Eric Sorensen is gauging reaction to this major shift in Liberal priorities. Plus, Canada's top court has ruled intimate partner violence as a legal basis for pursuing civil damages. The decision stems from a case involving a woman who was subjected to physical and emotional abuse by her husband throughout their 16 year marriage. But as Jillian Piper reports, the ruling has wider implications and could pave the way for more survivors to seek justice. And, as U.S. President Donald Trump returns to Washington from China, there are many unanswered questions about whether the U.S. will discontinue arms sales to Taiwan. President Xi Jinping warned Trump that differences over Taiwan could lead to conflict. And as Candice Cole reports, Trump now appears to be weighing his next move very carefully.
