Description

GIVE THE GIFT YOU HAVE RECEIVED | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (June 14, 2026) with Sign Language We are on the Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time; and today’s Gospel according to Saint Matthew presents three lessons that might help us approach this season, which is characterized by ordinariness and growth. The first part of the gospel narrative shows us the heart of Jesus. He was “moved with pity” because the crowds looked like sheep without a shepherd. Clearly, the Lord notices his people and would like to accommodate everyone. Yet he also opens the ministry to others by inviting us to pray to God “to send out laborers for his harvest.” The second part shows us the lineage of these “laborers,” the twelve disciples who were given “authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness.” They were from different backgrounds, but the Lord called them to a common mission. Then, the narrative concludes with Jesus’s instruction to proclaim that “the kingdom of heaven is at hand”—“to cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons.” In other words, to continue his ministry—and, as he did, to do it generously and without asking for anything in return. “Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.” How might we help Jesus in his ministry, brothers and sisters? Let us discover our calling and gifts as we navigate the Ordinary Time.
