Description
What do you do when medicine — the dream your parents built their whole identity around — says no to you twice? If you are Victory, you sit on a dining chair for 18 hours a day for four months, learn SQL, Excel, Python, PowerBI and Tableau from scratch, land a $10 gig on Fiverr, walk to your dad and say "they paid me in foreign currency" — and mean it with your whole chest. This is not a story about talent. It is a story about what happens when someone refuses to accept the version of their life that other people wrote for them. Victory wanted to be a neurosurgeon. He read Gifted Hands. He was convinced. He wrote JAMB twice, scored 224 and then 237, and both times the system told him no. He ended up studying physiology, a course he never chose, in a department he described plainly as being full of sadists. He graduated without distinction. His dad, a man who had staked the family's entire hope on the medicine dream, stopped speaking to everyone in the house for two weeks when Victory woke up one day and decided he was done trying. What came next was a masterclass in relentless, almost irrational persistence. A WhatsApp status about a data science bootcamp. A ₦20,000 course he begged his dad to pay half of. Day one, they were already writing machine learning code. The next week, lockdown started. He went home, opened his laptop, and entered an 18-hour-a-day spiral of pure self-teaching that lasted four months. The dining chairs in his father's house still bear the evidence. He moved to Lagos with a secret agreement — be in Lagos for the window between July and September, then quietly return to do direct entry into medicine in Benin. He never went back. He applied for data analyst roles from 9am to 5pm every single day until he had exhausted every listing in Nigeria, then started applying outside the country. Flutterwave called. He failed the interview because his laptop was too slow to load a Power BI dashboard in 45 minutes. A friend he met on Twitter got that job instead. He applied for a portfolio analyst
