The Worst Of WCW Volume 2: We're Taking Over

In the mid-1990s, World Championship Wrestling rose from the ashes of years of mismanagement to become the number one wrestling company in the world. The catalyst was the New World Order, a revolutionary storyline that saw Scott Hall and Kevin Nash invade from the WWF, soon joined by a stunningly villainous Hulk Hogan. This angle gave WCW the momentum it needed to dominate the Monday Night Wars, creating a seemingly insurmountable lead over its competition. But since this is a story about WCW, the whole thing eventually came spiraling back to Earth in dramatic fashion. As all of the company's focus shifted to the NWO, other major storylines fans were invested in were unceremoniously abandoned. WCW's own roster was made to look consistently weak and ineffective, creating a narrative where the invading force was so dominant that the company they were invading was rendered an afterthought. This volume delves into the questionable creative decisions that defined this era, from the overhyped and underwhelming martial arts character Glacier to the infamous glass ceiling that held back a roster of incredibly talented performers. It also explores the bizarre celebrity crossovers that saw talk show hosts and basketball players stepping into the ring, often at the expense of the full-time wrestlers. These decisions showcased a company that was beginning to lose its way, even at the height of its success. The book builds to the critical moments that marked the beginning of WCW's downfall, including the disastrous Starrcade 1997 pay-per-view that failed to deliver on its monumental hype. Follow the story of how WCW took the most surefire moneymaking angle they ever had and completely fumbled it. This is the definitive account of how WCW flew too close to the sun and began its long, spectacular fall.Read more
