The Paris, Paris Timeline: A Timeline of Paris History, Paris People, Paris Places and Paris Events

The Paris,ParisTimeline brings Paris and its history to life. The streets, courtyards, monuments, museums, churches, parks, gardens and riverbanks of Paris are living volumes open to anyone able to read them. With this concise, quirky volume you have key dates and the cast of characters at your fingertips, plus the city’s major sites and historic events, from Ancient Gaul and Julius Caesar’s conquest in 52 BC to Napoleon or Charles de Gaulle and the current mayor of the city, Anne Hidalgo, the first-ever woman mayor of Paris. The City of Light may well be the modern capital of one of the world’s richest, most industrialized nations, a vast sprawl with over 12 million inhabitants. Yet traces of the megapolis’s 2,000-year+ history crop up in countless places, and in the peculiar behavior, habits and curious customs of Parisians. That’s because Paris lives in the historical present, one foot in the present, the other in the past. How to use this book? Easy. Pick a time period or a historical theme, an event or a specific date, a character important to French history, or a site, then read the entries that interest you and hit the streets.
