The Bartered Wife

Dragged to London’s Smithfield Market in a halter to be auctioned off like a barnyard animal by her abusive husband, Iris is rescued from a stampede by a handsome stranger who offers to buy her. But her dream of finding happiness with him is shattered when he takes her home and fails to consummate the marriage, relegating her to a servant’s bed in the kitchen. Iris perseveres, bearing the humiliation and frustration of living in the shadow of his late wife, trying to please her new husband and his hateful daughter, and failing miserably. All seems lost until a handsome stranger shows up and turns their world upside down.Read more
