Ripples: How one child’s promise to an animal changed everything

A summer trip to his grandparents’ farm changes everything for a ten-year-old boy when he witnesses the fate of a calf he loved. Shaken but determined, he makes a vow that will test his courage, reshape his family, and send ripples through everyone around him. When a ten-year-old boy visits his grandparents’ farm for a summer holiday, he expects lazy days, games in the hayloft, and fresh pies cooling on the kitchen windowsill. Instead, he stumbles upon something he can never unsee: the butchering of a young calf he had secretly named Daisy.Shaken to his core, he makes a vow—never again will he eat meat, dairy, eggs, honey, or anything taken from animals. What begins as a child’s desperate promise grows into a life-altering stand that ripples outward through his family, his friendships, and his small-town community. At home, mealtimes become battlegrounds as his parents and grandparents struggle to understand his conviction. At school, he faces teasing, skepticism, and the constant question: Why make life harder on yourself? Yet in the middle of the laughter and resistance, surprising allies begin to appear—friends who grow curious, teachers who admire his courage, and even family members who, little by little, begin to soften.Through awkward birthday parties, tense family dinners, and a potluck that tests his resolve, he learns that keeping a promise isn’t easy. But he also discovers that even the smallest stand can make ripples—and ripples can spread.Tender, moving, and full of heart, this coming-of-age story explores the challenges of living true to your values in a world that doesn’t always understand. His journey is one of love, courage, and hope—a reminder that even one small light, shining steady, can brighten the darkest night.Read more
