Two 18-year-old men, one from the peaceful Minnesota countryside, and one from the quiet lands near Hakata, Japan, joined their nation's navies shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack. Harold Kiel became a seaman on a rescue ship, witnessing the daily horrors of battle when the injured were pulled aboard for medial treatment.
