The political journey of Daniel Moi, Kenya’s second president

Paglalarawan

In Part 2 of our continuing series, we look at how Daniel arap Moi navigated one of the most dangerous political landscapes in Kenya’s history — a journey defined by power struggles, succession fears, and a constitutional race against time. Daniel arap Moi’s rise to the presidency was no accident. It was a political storm shaped in the shadows: • The growing influence of Tom Mboya and why it terrified the ruling elite • The British-backed 1968 constitutional amendment that introduced the “90 days” rule • How Moi endured humiliation, intimidation and internal sabotage • Lee Njiru’s vivid recollections of Moi’s loyalty and quiet resilience • The night Mzee Jomo Kenyatta died — and the battle that erupted immediately • Why many dismissed Moi as a “passing cloud”… and how he proved them wrong This episode breaks down the tense days following Kenyatta’s death, and how the constitutional clock shaped Moi’s rise to the highest office in the land.
