SN ARCHIVES - Elizabethan Playwrights Series - Educational Programme - Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593), one of the most influential playwrights of the English Renaissance, wrote The Massacre at Paris around 1592–1593. The play dramatizes the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of 1572, when thousands of Huguenots were killed in Paris in an outburst of religious and political violence under King Charles IX. The play combines Marlowe’s characteristic rhetorical power with stark depictions of massacre, betrayal, and the destructive nature of power. It explores questions of religious identity, moral culpability, and the political exploitation of sectarian hatred. The surviving text is fragmentary and often considered corrupt, yet its intensity remains clear: Marlowe employs spectacle and psychological tension to force the audience to confront the horrors of fanaticism. Scholarship has noted especially the role of sensory experience in the play—sounds of violence, sudden shifts of tone, and visual grotesqueries—as well as the moral ambiguity of figures such as the Duke of Guise and Henry of Navarre. At the same time, The Massacre at Paris shows Marlowe’s engagement with history and the shaping of collective memory through drama. He adapts contemporary pamphlets and chronicles but transforms them into a compressed theatrical narrative that heightens impact through abrupt transitions and concentrated action. The play raises enduring questions about how atrocity should be represented: how much should be staged directly, how much alluded to, and how religious or moral rhetoric can be distorted for political ends. Its jagged structure, alternating between scenes of brutal violence and moments of reflection, anticipates modern explorations of trauma in theatre. In this way, Marlowe does not simply recount events but interrogates how societies remember and re-enact acts of mass violence. BBC Radio 3 broadcast, 1993: The play was adapted and aired on 30 May 1993 on BBC Radio 3, directed by Alan Drury and Michael Earley. CAST J
