S5 E1: The Serpent of the Deep Earth

Paglalarawan

Season 5 • Episode 1 — The Serpent of the Deep Earth: The Bakunawa. A bruise-dark sky hangs over Manila and the city holds its breath. When the moon disappears and the ground trembles, are we witnessing nature — or something older, hungry, and patient beneath our feet? Tonight we trace the Bakunawa: the giant serpent that swallows moons, shakes the earth, and lives in the stories Filipinos have told for generations to explain eclipses, earthquakes, and loss. From coastal towns banging pots during eclipses to offerings cast into the bays of Bicol, from elders’ warnings to modern eyewitness accounts, this episode moves between folklore and lived experience — and asks what happens when myth helps a community survive fear. Trigger warning: this episode contains dark and unsettling scenes. Listener discretion is advised. Send your own strange tales to storiesPHpodcast@gmail.com.
