Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema was sentenced to five years direct imprisonment by Magistrate Twanet Olivier at the KuGompo City Regional Court in East London, Eastern Cape, on 16 April 2026, after being convicted on five counts under the Firearms Control Act for unlawfully discharging a semi-automatic rifle at the EFF fifth birthday celebration at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane in 2018. In a explosive courtroom exchange, Malema clashed with Magistrate Olivier during cross-examination before his senior counsel Advocate Laurence Hodes fired back point by point against every finding in the sentencing judgment, calling the five year custodial sentence startlingly inappropriate and inducing a sense of shock. Malema then addressed EFF supporters outside court, calling Magistrate Twanet Olivier a racist, accusing the prosecutor of perjury, and claiming an invisible hand was controlling the proceedings — leave to appeal was subsequently granted and the matter now heads to the Eastern Cape High Court in Bhisho. #juliusmalema #madlangacommission
