The speaker highlights Gandhi’s arrival in Calcutta on 9 August 1947, just as Hindu-Muslim tensions were rising. A year earlier, in 1946, the Direct Action Day had led to the tr*gic loss of over 4,000 Hindu lives caused by supporters of the Muslim League. However, Gandhi remained silent during that period and appeared only when community tensions escalated post-Partition. Instead of focusing on Hindu suffering, Gandhi chose to stay with Suhrawardy — the very man linked to the Direct Action Day incdent — and appealed to Hindus to maintain peace. He even advised Hindus living in Pakistan to respect the national flag there and not consider migrating to India. This position appeared contradictory; while promoting non-vilence to Hindus, Gandhi sought protection from armed individuals like Gopal Patha and pressured the government through fasting when the Muslim community faced threats. Gandhi also remained quiet on the brutal loss of peace volunteers like Satyen Mitra and Smritish Banerjee. His selective silence and repeated calls to raise Pakistan’s flag in India upset many. The speaker concludes that Gandhi’s version of non-vi*lence masked a deeper pattern of appeasement, challenging the official narrative often presented in history books. --------------------------------------------------------------
