Despite possessing some of the world’s richest reserves of cobalt and other minerals that power the global economy, the Democratic Republic of Congo remains trapped in a chronic state of humanitarian crisis. Billions in international aid flow into the country each year, yet structural violence, displacement, and inequality endure. This paradox raises a difficult question: How is humanitarian aid, which is intended to alleviate suffering, also reproducing imperial hierarchies and long-term dependency? Drawing from colonial history, Third World Approaches to International Law, and the lived realities of Congo, this podcast examines how modern humanitarianism can perpetuate the very inequalities it seeks to remedy. Through expert insights from Dr. Claudia Seymour, professor at the Geneva Graduate Institute and former humanitarian worker in the DRC whose book “The Myth of International Protection” directly interrogates the dynamics examined in this episode, and from Congolese political scientist and professor Dr. Guilain Mathe, it explores how international protection regimes create parallel systems of authority that undermine Congolese sovereignty. Drawing further on the perspective of Serena Musungu, a Congolese medical student whose lived experience in the DRC is complemented by her understanding of how humanitarian systems operate locally, the episode argues for a decolonial shift toward Congolese-led governance, local knowledge, and co-leadership in humanitarian programming. By uncovering how foreign intervention continues to shape power dynamics in the DRC, this episode challenges listeners to confront an uncomfortable truth: the empire never truly left the Congo; it simply adopted the language of humanitarianism.
