SN ARCHIVES - Elizabethan Playwrights Series - Educational Programme - Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593) wrote Dido, Queen of Carthage—probably between the late 1580s and 1593, with possible contributions from Thomas Nashe—adapting Books I and IV of Virgil’s Aeneid into a short but rhetorically intense tragedy. Marlowe foregrounds Dido’s experience: the play stages Aeneas’s arrival, the gods’ interventions, and the fatal passion between Aeneas and the Carthaginian queen, while amplifying the psychological and political costs of love, fate and sovereignty. The language is early Marlowean, full of vivid imagery and rhetorical energy, and the work offers important evidence of Marlowe’s developing tragic technique and his interest in how mythic destiny intersects with individual desire. Thematically, Dido interrogates the tension between personal passion and public duty, and explores gendered authority—Dido as sovereign who is both politically powerful and personally vulnerable. Marlowe’s treatment of divine machinery (Venus, Juno, Jupiter, Cupid) highlights the theatrical mediation of fate: gods shape human action, yet human choices and political consequences remain painfully visible. Although less often staged than Marlowe’s later, more expansive tragedies, Dido is invaluable for understanding his early dramatic concerns—particularly the tragic cost of desire and the instability of rulership in an age preoccupied with empire and gendered rule. Note on the BBC Radio 3 production (1993): BBC Radio 3 broadcast an adaptation of Dido, Queen of Carthage on 30 May 1993 (the 400th anniversary year of Marlowe’s death), directed for radio by Alan Drury and Michael Earley. The principal cast for that production is recorded as follows: Sally Dexter – Dido Timothy Walker – Aeneas Jeremy Blake – Iarbas Ben Thomas – Achates Teresa Gallagher – Anna / Juno David Thorpe – Sergestus / Hermes John Webb – Jupiter / Ilioneus Philip Anthony – Cloanthus Ian Shaw – Ascanius Diana Payan – Venus Andrew Wincott – Cupid Matthew Sim – Ganyme
