The Founding Scoundrel: An Artist in Treason

In the tumultuous birth of the American republic, a new breed of hero emerged—and a new kind of villain.Founding Scoundrelplunges into the dark heart of one such figure: General James Wilkinson, a man of dazzling charisma and ruthless ambition who rose to the highest ranks of the nascent United States. A veteran of the Revolution, a commander of the United States Army, and the Governor of the Louisiana Territory, Wilkinson was, by all outward appearances, a paragon of patriotism.Yet, a profound "deformity of the soul" drove him to see every person as a tool and every situation as an opportunity. Through the slow-moving, rumor-filled world of the late 18th century, Wilkinson weaves a chilling web of deceit, betrayal, and treason. He manipulates figures like George Rogers Clark, Aaron Burr, and "Mad Anthony" Wayne, all while secretly serving as a paid agent of the Spanish Empire. This is a story of a man who believed his own lies, a man whose cunning and charm allowed him to evade justice for decades, leaving a trail of ruined lives in his wake. As the narrative unfolds, we see the meticulous, quiet forces of history—a forgotten ledger, an intercepted letter, a secret journal—slowly but inexorably close in on him.Founding Scoundrelis a masterful work of historical fiction that explores the terrifying power of unchecked ambition and the enduring question: how did one man so profoundly deceive a nation?Read more
