Socialism: An Essential Review

All across America, political candidates for federal, state, and local office are proclaiming the principles of socialism. They offer revolutionary solutions to persistent social challenges, such as: income inequality, low wages, rising health care costs, student debt, racism, and climate change. But, would their policies lead to a reduction or expansion of human suffering? Do their principles rest on reality or fantasy? Father Bernard Vaughan, Priest of the Society of Jesus, answers these questions, and more, as he examines general principles of social justice, socialism, and capitalism in Socialism: An Essential Review. Inspired by the words of Pope Pius X, and the writings of Pope Leo XIII, Father Vaughan discusses, among other topics, the relationship between socialism and the individual, family, state, and church. This book is required reading for everyone who wishes to understand the foundations of the socialist movement in America and aspires to “secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.” The writer of Proverbs encourages everyone to: “Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (Prov 31:8-9)Read more
