Sacrifice: The Maryland 400 during the Battle of Brooklyn

Sacrifice:The Maryland 400 during the Battle of Brooklynby Kevin GroteA rivalry forged in the tobacco fields. A love caught in the crossfire. A war that demands the ultimate sacrifice. In the humid summer of 1776, as the drumbeat of revolution stirs the ancient dust of Maryland, cousins Elijah and Thomas Bowen find their lives, once as entwined as the tobacco vines, now twisted by discord and their shared desire for Annabelle Mattingly, a woman whose spirit is as unyielding as the summer sun. When the call to arms echoes through the colonies, Elijah, fueled by idealism and a desperate urge to prove himself, enlists in the Maryland Line. But the brutal realities of war quickly temper his youthful dreams, as he confronts the relentless grind of training and the insidious threat of disease that claims more lives than any musket ball. Unbeknownst to Elijah, Tom soon follows, driven by his own complex motivations, transplanting their bitter rivalry to a far more brutal arena. The Battle of Long Island becomes their crucible. Amidst the chaos and carnage, the Marylanders, including Elijah and Tom, make a desperate stand at the Old Stone House, a heroic sacrifice to buy time for Washington's army. In that maelstrom, one cousin will make an impossible choice, a profound act of selfless sacrifice that ensures the other’s survival, but at a cost that will ripple through their lives, leaving a legacy of sorrow and a love forever lost.Elijah returns home a changed man, a jaded survivor haunted by the "unseen" truth of Tom's fate. His agonizing confession to Belle rips open old wounds, revealing the devastating price of his survival and leaving him to battle for forgiveness in a world forever altered by war."Sacrifice" is a powerful tale of enduring love, bitter rivalry, and the profound, personal cost of liberty in the forged in the furnace of the American Revolution.Read more
