Itamar Rocha, the President of the Brazilian aquaculture association, describes the successful FENACAM exposition in Natal last week and some of the remarkable developments that have occurred like: 1) emergence of nearly two thousand small holder shrimp farms in the state of Ceara which are located 400-500 km from the sea using slightly saline ground water and 2) rapid growth of the tilapia sector.  Both developments are far from the Amazon and pose no risk to that critical ecosystem.
