Inside Kenya’s Fuel Crisis: What They Don’t Tell You

الوصف

In May 14, 2026, the cost of diesel in Kenya hit 242 shillings and ninety-two cents per litre — the highest price ever recorded in Kenya's history. Four days later, after a national transport strike, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority rewrote its own pricing formula at midnight, cutting diesel by 10 shillings and spiking kerosene by 38.60 in a single directive. This analysis is about why that happened — and what it tells us about the structural state of the Kenyan fiscal system. The war in the Gulf explains the landed cost. It does not explain the midnight scramble inside our own borders. In this piece: the July 14 VAT trap that's engineered to self-destruct, the 18.1 billion shillings drained from the petroleum stabilisation fund to pay a Chinese rail operator, the 90-shilling price gap that created an overnight criminal enterprise, and the strongest fiscal-realism defence of all of it. This is a civic-analysis piece. No partisan framing. No commercial promotion.
