I Sing of Troy

I SING OF TROYGods, fate, heroes, villains, love and betrayal. And one poet.Perfect for fans of Madeline Miller, Jennifer Saint, Natalie Haynes, Hannah Lynn and Stephen Fry.The Trojan War has long been considered a legend; a fable written by Homer four centuries after the events he depicts. Yet the excavation of an ancient place in Crete yields a stunning discovery. Parchments buried for three thousand years reveal that the Trojan War was a real event and Homer a participant in the war. A reluctant participant but, nevertheless, an eyewitness to the blunders, heroism and deeds of men who found themselves caught in a conflict none could control. For behind the tragedy are the three Fates who weave every man and woman’s life thread, weigh and measure it before ruthlessly wielding the shears of death. No one can escape. Not the beautiful Helen, a woman who beguiled the world, not her husband Menelaus who lost her to the narcissistic prince of Troy, their love the spark which lit the flames of war. Not even the men who fan the flames can escape: Agamemnon, High-King of the Greeks, a man of monumental arrogance and vanity, Priam, King of Troy, caring only for his pride and family. Even the mightiest warriors cannot cheat the fates, not Hector, hero of Troy, not Achilles the quick-tempered, killer not even the cunning Odysseus. All are prey to the implacable Fates and the bored and spiteful gods who delight to play games with hapless mortals.Yet one man in all that conflict cheats the plots of fate and gods. For Homer, reluctant warrior Homer, is destined to make a tale which will write anew the story of the war. Heroes will become villains and villains have some claim to being heroes. And the story is part written by his lover who is held captive in Troy. For although the Fates weave destiny, only poets sing songs which live down the ages.Read more
