Beyond Papillon: The True Story of Devil’s Island and the Bagne de Cayenneby Julien PeltierFor nearly a century, France shipped its unwanted to a hell on earth. But the true story is even more extraordinary — and far darker — than the myths. In this gripping history, Julien Peltier draws on convict memoirs, eyewitness journalism, and archival records to bring thebagne de Cayenneto life. He reveals:The brutal machinery of exile that turned men into ghosts. The daily lives of prisoners and guards in the jungle. The escapes — both legendary and forgotten — that fed the myth of Devil’s Island. How a failed penal experiment became one of the most notorious prisons in the world. And why the ruins of Cayenne still haunt France and the Americas today.Beyond Papillonis more than a history of a prison.
