Al-Andalus: The Muslim Conquest And Rule Of Iberia

In the spring of 711, a small army of Arab and Berber warriors crossed the sea from Africa, landing on a great rock that would forever bear their commander's name: Gibraltar. They arrived to find the Visigothic Kingdom of Hispania consumed by a bitter civil war, a weakness they would exploit with ruthless efficiency. This single intervention set in motion a chain of events that would reshape the Iberian Peninsula for the next eight hundred years. From the ashes of this swift conquest rose the civilization of Al-Andalus, a unique and complex society on European soil. At its zenith, the Caliphate of Córdoba became the most advanced state in Europe, a beacon of science, medicine, and philosophy while the rest of the continent languished. This book chronicles the rise of this remarkable civilization, exploring the splendor of its cities and the intricate social hierarchy of the Muslims, Christians, and Jews who lived within it.The brilliance of Al-Andalus, however, was not destined to last, as internal decay led to a catastrophic civil war that shattered its unity into a mosaic of competing petty kingdoms. The narrative follows the long, violent struggle of the Reconquista, from the rise of the northern Christian kingdoms to the interventions of zealous North African empires and the clash of legendary warriors. Discover the story of pivotal battles and the slow, centuries-long retreat that culminated in the fall of the last Muslim stronghold, Granada, in 1492.This account does not end with the final surrender. It details the tragic aftermath of the conquest, including the broken promises of religious freedom, the forced conversions that followed, and the final, total expulsion of the last descendants of the conquerors. It concludes by tracing the indelible legacy of Al-Andalus, revealing how nine centuries of Islamic civilization remain permanently embedded in the language, architecture, food, and culture of modern Spain and Portugal.Read more
