The Empire State: A History of New York

A Sweeping History of The Great State of New YorkFrom the Haudenosaunee Confederacy to the gleaming towers of Manhattan, New York has been at the center of the American story for four centuries. This sweeping narrative traces how a Dutch trading post became the nation's indispensable state—shaping revolutions, building canals that opened a continent, welcoming waves of immigrants who transformed a nation, and creating the financial and cultural capital of the modern world.Through vivid storytelling and sharp analysis,The Empire Statereveals how New York's history illuminates America's broader trajectory. Here are the robber barons and labor organizers, the corrupt politicians and visionary reformers, the crises that nearly destroyed the state and the resilience that saved it. From the Battle of Saratoga to the September 11 attacks, from the Erie Canal to the fiscal collapse of the 1970s, New York has been where America's future was prototyped and tested. But this is also a story of deep divisions—between upstate and downstate, rich and poor, competing visions of what New York should be. As the state faces challenges from inequality to climate change,The Empire Stateasks whether New York can reinvent itself once more, or whether its greatest days lie in the past.Read more
