Hay Balers and Holy Rollers: The Story of my Appalachian Childhood

Hay Balers & Holy Rollersis a gripping, firsthand account of a boy born in the 1980s who grew up straddling two contrasting worlds: the rugged coalfields of West Virginia and the rolling hayfields of Southwestern Virginia. Written by a preacher, this memoir is raw and unfiltered, with glimpses of rough language and gritty experiences that reflect the realities of a challenging upbringing. At the heart of this story lies the boy’s profound and often complex relationship with his family, particularly his two grandfathers and his great-grandfather, a wealthy, hardened, and godless man known only as “The Old Man.” Through vivid storytelling, Jeremy, the author, takes readers on a journey through The Old Man’s life of wealth, power, and rebellion against faith, culminating in a remarkable transformation at the twilight of his years. This deeply personal narrative follows Jeremy’s life from his mother’s teenage pregnancy through the trials and triumphs of boyhood, adolescence, and adulthood. It chronicles the lessons learned from rural life, the bonds of family, and the intersection of faith and redemption. Ultimately, the story builds to the emotional moment when Jeremy, now an older adult, lays The Old Man to rest, reflecting on the enduring power of grace and the legacy of transformation.Hay Balers & Holy Rollersis a heartfelt memoir that offers a raw, honest look at family, faith, and the redemptive power of God in the unlikeliest of lives.Read more
