Chicken Today, Feathers Tomorrow

Putting the old Soviet world behind him in retirement should have set Mike Lacondeguy at ease, but an addled old hippy and an Uzbek firebrand determined to do things her way make that impossible. In the second book ofThe New Americanstrilogy, CHICKEN TODAY, FEATHERS TOMORROW, an aged Flower Child living on the streets and a young Uzbek agitator draw Mike Lacondeguy into a world where urban legend and common sense collide and where he can no longer run from his past. While tangled in the war in Ukraine, Mike comes across a book of poems with a mystifying couplet:All the world went silent/Only the maidens and the nightingale stirred. Back home in Virginia, a homeless woman who argues with squirrels, dresses in her dead husband’s military fatigues, and performs the occasional miracle if local legend can be believed calls him out.She pressures Mike to intervene in the life of Asal, a young Uzbek woman prone to fits of violence and crippling bouts of compassion. Together, they trace a series of events going back years that reveals a shocking bond between them.CHICKEN TODAY, FEATHERS TOMORROW is a heartbreaking, humorous, and ultimately uplifting fable of the quintessential American ritual of reinventing oneself.Mike is back in action despite his efforts to slip into obscurity. He finds himself entwined in the lives of three Uzbeks whose fates he unwittingly knit together a decade earlier when he lent aid to a stranger.
