Bukele: Creating the New El Salvador

In a nation once synonymous with violence, corruption, and despair, a young, tech-savvy president promised radical change—and delivered.Bukele: Creating the New El Salvadoroffers an incisive exploration of Nayib Bukele’s meteoric rise and his controversial yet transformative presidency.Donald Elton meticulously examines how Bukele broke decades of stagnation and fear by dramatically reducing crime rates through an unprecedented war on gangs, modernizing infrastructure, and challenging deep-seated corruption. The charismatic Bukele bypassed traditional politics, wielding social media mastery to connect directly with citizens, transforming governance into a real-time, public dialogue.Yet, Bukele’s revolution came at a high price: democracy itself. Under a sweeping state of exception, constitutional rights were suspended, tens of thousands were imprisoned, and due process often became an afterthought. Elton critically assesses the paradox of El Salvador’s resurgence—a peace and prosperity built on authoritarian methods, questioning the very nature of democracy and security. This timely and balanced narrative explores how Bukele’s actions have reshaped not only El Salvador but also the broader region, influencing politicians from Guatemala to Argentina and posing challenging questions for democracies everywhere. Can authoritarian measures ever be justified if they deliver safety and prosperity? And what happens when personal charisma replaces institutional stability?Elton delves deeply into the complexities of Bukele’s background, from his Palestinian heritage and privileged upbringing to his innovative approaches as a mayor, revealing the experiences that shaped this unconventional leader.Bukele: Creating the New El Salvadoris essential reading for understanding how a nation of profound trauma and potential became a global laboratory for governance, democracy, and the dangerous allure of authoritarian populism.Read more
