An African Testament: The Heart of the Kebra Nagast in a Modern English Version

'The Queen of the South was Makeda, the Queen of Ethiopia. She was very lovely to look at, and her intelligence and understanding were also beautiful: God had given her these gifts.' Revered as a holy book by Rastafarians and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the Kebra Nagast is a medieval African supplement to the Bible. At its heart is the story of how King Solomon seduced the Queen of Sheba and helped found the dynasty that ruled Ethiopia for nearly three thousand years. Simon Webb's modern English re-telling of the essential Kebra Nagast is vivid, highly accessible and faithful to the original. As he states in his introduction, 'For the children of the African Diaspora in general, the Kebra Nagast is a powerful antidote to the poisonous assertion of the colonisers, that before they came, Black Africa never had any worthwhile history, literature or religion.'Read more
